EDM Challenge #111 - Draw a Bowl, Plus Jack!!

Here are my drawings for the Everyday Matters bowl challenge, #111. I used a green stoneware vegetable serving bowl from the kitchen. I made two drawings - one in pen and watercolor and one in pastels.  I thought I'd put them both up.

I have come to realize that I am a bit obsessive when it comes to color application. That doesn't work very well with watercolor, because the paint can't be messed with too much. Once it's on the paper, one can't go over it too many times - which I always want to do.

This challenge has really been a challenge!

Here's my dog Jack, in full performance mode. It was a sunny day last weekend and we went to the dog park: "Gimme That Treat Will Ya???"

Oh these are wonderful bowl drawings. I'm not sure which one I like best, maybe the second one. Not sure. Your dog is SO CUTE! I love going to the dog park. It's kinda sad cuz we don't go much anymore 'cuz my husband's dog (and Eskie) is psycho and attacks other dogs (my dog is a Pug). So I can only go alone or while making hubby leave his dog home and that makes me feel bad.

Very well done on your pictures of the bowl. They are both excellent, showing the light reflections beautifully.

Lovely dog, too.

both so different. I like the warmth and softness of the top one and then I'm attracted to the crispness of the lower one. very nice. jules

Emma,
Thanks for posting both of these bowls. Both are lovely, but the watercolor one has such a great reflective quality to the ceramic surface. Without the pastel piece for comparison it might not have made such an impression on my brain. Reflections are still a huge struggle and my journal shows it!

I have the same tendency with watercolour, which is one of the reasons I love pastels so much: more scope for messing around!

You've put some lovely detail into the rim of the bowl in both versions.

They are both lovely. I think I like the watercolor version best - I like the crispness of it and the reflections really make it look like it's ceramic (and it doesn't look overworked at all to me). Great job!

I love them both! The top one for the color and the bottom one for the softness. Those darn ellipses make me crazy and you made it look easy.

These are both really good. The colors of the first are eye-catching,and the second one has a lovely softness to it. The reflections are excellent.

Emma Pod, these are such beautiful sketches. You really rose to meet the challenge. Both of them are gorgeous but I'm partial to the watercolor because of the relections. Nice work.

Thanks everyone for your nice comments on my bowls! It's always interesting to know what others see and think. I know that I am always most critical of my own work. It's fun to try different mediums and see what happens - they turn out so differently. I'm still trying to figure out what I like to work with most.

lhBeautiful bowls, the reflections are great! I know what you mean about colour - I always want to just do a little bit more tweaking!
Thanks for stopping by my blog and commenting. (BTW I will be doing more prints of the hare very soon, it'll be on my blog when I do :))

They are both excellent, if I were to choose a fav, it would be the watercolor. I'm partial to w/c anyway, but you've really done a fantastic job of portraying the shine of the porcelain and the color is outstanding!!

I love these bowls, both of them! Can't choose a favorite, because they both have their own uniqueness...
Beautiful work here!

You have done a beautiful job on both of these bowls, Emma. I love the watercolour one with its reflections and the pattern. I love the colour and softness you've achieved with the pastels. They look fantastic on watercolour paper - can you believe I've never tried that?
What's my favourite? Jack's my favourite - I'm another dog person :) And thank you for visiting my blog.

Very interesting to see these two together. It's nice to develop facility in a variety of mediums so you can get the effect you want.

These are both just gorgeous, Mary. I like the clean look of the watercolor, but the paste has nice rich color. And I had a lot of fun reading your posts about animals yours and the wild squirrels!
